Customer Reviews for Traveling Toddler: Attach a Toddler Car Seat to a Rolling Carry-on --- Traveling Toddler

It Barely or Did Not Fit Our Carry-on with Britax Roundabout

I bought this to use on our recent Spring Break vacation. I'm a big baby travel gadget fan and own lots of various types of car seat carrier accessories bought from here and places like One Step Ahead. I was really excited about this after reading the rave reviews on Amazon. We did not intend to use this to carry my 9 month old; we only meant to use it to carry the car seat since I carry the baby on me with a baby carrier. Well, after using it on our last trip (from Chicago to Southern California and back), my husband refused to use it at the end, preferring to hand carry the Britax Roundabout. Why? Because the horizontal straps (imagine the top horizontal line of the "T") -- the one with a ring on each end -- is just a bit too short. We had two rolling carry-on size suitcases, an American Tourister with an expandable top that could add another three inches and a Samsonite. My husband had pulled the latch straps on the car seat out as far as they'd extend. No matter how he tugged things the Traveling Toddler straps (the side with two rings that goes around the body of the suitcase to hook onto each side of the carseat latch hook) was just a bit too short for the American Tourister -- presumably because the expandable top portion added another 1/2 inch or so in width, even though we had it zipped up to the smallest size. With the Samsonite, it was so snug that it'd take a good 5 minutes sometimes just for him to hook the straps on, and that is after doing a lot of adjustment and struggle. So imagine my husband's frustration with this each time we had to unhook and hook it -- after removal of the luggage from the shuttle/car into the airport, going through security, leaving security and going to the gate, getting on the plane (because it was tough to pull the carseat down the narrow aisles), off the plane gangway, etc. I told him I'll try to find some sort of extension or maybe try using some keychain rings to hook onto the D ring to extend the straps for our next trip; until then, he said we're not using this anymore. Seriously, for the price of this simple (but clever) contraption you'd think the maker could have made the straps a bit longer to accommodate thicker carry-on suitcases and car seats with shorter latch straps! The latch straps can always be adjusted to be a bit shorter/tighter, so it can't be a matter of safety to not add a bit more length -- even an inch would have helped -- to this Traveling Toddler strap. Right now I cannot recommend this for anyone with a big carseat like the Britax Roundabout or anyone with a carryon suitcase that is not on the thinner side. I gave this two stars because it deserves one star for the idea and another star for the fact that when we were able to squeeze one onto to the Samsonite, it was great to roll the carseat around instead of carrying it on our backs (via one of those backpack carseat carriers) or carrying it in another big bag (since we already has so many bags/cases).
EASY ON, EASY OFF

THIS WAS GREAT ON OUR TRIP. IT MADE MOVING THROUGH THE AIRPORT WITH THE CARSEAT EASY, ONLY DRAWBACK IS IF YOUR CHILD IS IN THE SEAT AND YOU HAVE TO GO FORWARD INSTEAD OF PULLING THE BAG THAT THE CARSEAT IS ATTACHED TO IT IS HARD MOVING OVER BUMPS BUT OVERALL VERY POSITIVE EXPERIENCE.
Very Helpful, but a little difficult to attach...

We used this with our 3 year old almost 4 as we traveled to Denver. The airport we left from was very small so there was no need to use it, but once we got to Denver it became our lifesaver. We had practiced with it a little before the trip, so my husband and I would be familiar with how it works, and I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND practicing prior to arriving at the airport. My son rode comfortably in his Britax Marathon while we navigated the very large and spread out Denver airport. It really saved us time, because he was tired and we could have never carried him through the airport. If you are traveling with a toddler, this is a must have.
Great product

This is a fantastic idea, and it works! We used it recently for our trip to Arizona and it was great. Between my husband and I we had 2 suitcases, 1 golf bag, an umbrella stroller and the car seat. This little invention made it easy for us to attach the car seat onto one of the suitcase, leaving us with just the other bag, the stroller and the golf bag to drag around.
I would recommend practicing at home before heading for the airport as this can be quite tricky to attach to the bag. My husband is normally very calm but I've seen him get angry because he couldn't get it to work. The trick for us was to pull the handle on the car seat to put it in the recline position, that way it fitted better.
You will have to unstrap the seat to go through security so just make sure you know how to do it properly and it will only take a minute to put back.
People in the airport were commenting on how clever it was and our daughter was happy riding in it. We used the suitcase/seat combo as our stroller in the airport which was very handy. We could even wheel her in the plane and only had to unstrap it once we reached our seat. I would imagine that in some plane the aisle might be too narrow to allow you to do that.
Overall a great product and most importantly if feels safe to use.

Great idea and product for the price

I checked out the Sit N Stroll and the Go Go Kidz TravelMate before deciding to try the Traveling Toddler. The Sit N Stroll seemed really great, switched easily from car seat to stroller and would have been one less thing to travel with, but the back recline does not adjust and it was too far back for my 2 year old to use as a stroller all day. I really liked the Traveling Toddler. It works great. It's a little annoying that you have to take it apart to go through security etc but it's easy enough to put back together. I used the largest carry-on I was allowed and it worked beautifully. My daughter loves her carseat (Britax Marathon) and was loving sitting in and being pushed around. (Make sure your carry-on pull locks upright or you can't push it in front of you, you'll have to pull it and I found it easier to push.) I saw someone else with the Go Go thing and it looks great but for nearly triple the price, I got this one since I don't fly often. A must-have if you need the car seat on the plane or your destination b/c you can also check the car seat and use this strap before/after in the airport instead of carrying it.
Not for toddlers

I bought this for my grandson. He is only two but this item did not work for him. His mother tried to use it to help her get through the air port. Unfortunately, she was unable to move the suitcase with the car seat attached and ended up having to carry the car seat in her hand while holding her toddler's hand and also toting a 7 mth old in a sling. They need to put in their ad that their is a weight limit so someone else does not waste their money as I did.
Love it!

While we did not put our son in the carseat while it was attached to the suitcase, this did a wonderful job of allowing us to wheel the carseat through the airports. We put our son in his stroller which we checked at the gate and he had his own seat on the plane so this was perfect. Much less expensive than the other options and it works great!
Works great--kind of pricey (for what you're getting)

I give this a 4 star, it's genius, but it's expensive (it's really just a t-bar strap that you could probably use your own belts, so for the price it gets 4 instead of 5 star). It worked great for us to wheel around our toddler in the airport, easy to take apart during the security search, and great to carry around in your purse/diaper bag until landing where you'll have to do it all over again until you get to the car. Could not have managed to have her Britax Marathon carseat (lugging it around) w/o this unique tool! I loved the Travelling Toddler! It was easy to undo and attach, it was super quick through the security lines & I have no complaints except for the cost of the thing. Much cheaper than other products, but for around $18 all you're really getting is a 't'-strap that connects to the seat and around your carry-on luggage, which probably cost 50cents to make!! Then again, it was SOOOO WORTH IT, when we travelled!! If you know a friend who has one, save yourself some cash & borrow it!!
The Best Travel Item We Ever Bought!

Love this product. Pure Genius! And people point and stare at our little girl chilling in her seat through the airport everytime. So many people comment on this. We have a Britex Marathon and our 2 year old LOVES her carseat, so we definatly take it flying because it keeps her happy being in her comfy space on the plane. But lugging it around would be a nightmare. These straps are SUPER easy to attach and a dream come true. I can check the stroller and don't have to worry. We can even attach her to the bag while she is asleep in her seat at the end of a flight. Its THAT easy, and the harness thing can fit in your pocket. (We store it in the small pocket of the bag we attach her to so we always know where it is when we get ready for a trip) We have only taken it attached down an Alaska Air plane isle, American we had to take it off and carry her in the seat, because it was two narrow, but that was her Carseats problem obviously. Its simple, its easy, and its strong enough even for a Britax. The only thing I personally would recommend, being 5'8 with a hubby who is 5'10, is getting a sturdy carry on size bag with a longer handle than most. The extra weight of more than the bag, having to bend a little to accomodate a short handle, is a little taxing on the body, but thats an easy remody. Also a bag with good wheels not a cheapy one you have to fight with WITHOUT the carseat on it.

Traveling Toddler

This works as described. There is no perfect way to get through the airport with luggage and a car seat, but this was helpful. If only we didn't have to separate the car seat and suit case during the security screening.

Does not work with Britax roundabout carseat

Unfortunately, we had to return this product. First, the instructions were very sparse and hard to follow. After an hour trying to test this product, we were still unable to locate the latches on the Britax roundabout car seat there are supposed to secure the horizontal portion of the belts from the left and the right. We did not test this product on other car seats, but would be surprised if the Britax roundabout car seat design is not standard.
Worth every single penny for peace of mind and ease of travel

This is an absolute LIFE SAVER!!! I am a single mom who likes to travel to visit family with my 20 mth old son. We are going to Reno soon and this is going to be the first time he will have his own seat. Before, I would just have him, the stroller, and our carry-on (which was bad enough in itself) but this time it would be him in his stroller with a heavy car seat on my back plus our carry on. Since we will have a connecting flight in Dallas/Ft Worth, I would have to do this multiple times. With the Traveling Toddler, all I will have to do is push my carry-on!!! I am so excited! The materials are pretty heavy duty (which equals durable) and I realize they may not have cost much to make, but this is worth it's weight in DIAMONDS for ease of use and peace of mind! I will be recommending this to all the families I know!
Pretty Handy

I have used this product twice. I used it the first time with my infant car seat. Of course my child was not inside. I planned on getting a bigger carseat for the travel back. It worked okay, considdering it was not designed for the infant carseat. It is a bit of a pain to take on and off at the security points. When we traveled with it using the Alpha Omega Elite it worked well. Took a bit to get it to really fit on the bag well, and it was a good sized carry on bag. We had a stroller as well and more or less used this to move the carseat. We did strap her in it just to check out how it works and it was fine. I think it was a good idea and a good buy since its not pricey. You can stick it in your bag and just pull it out of needed. Overall a good product.
An absolute MUST-HAVE when traveling with a carseat

After having traveled with my 18 month old last year while I was 5 months pregnant, I swore I would never travel alone again. You would have to be an octopus to handle all the items you need as you make your way through the airport: Stroller, carseat, luggage, child - and you only have 2 hands!

I found the "Traveling Toddler" on Amazon and am so thrilled I purchased it. As luck would have it, I had to travel with my now 3 year old and my 1 year old by myself, and certainly could not have done so without this device. With this simple strap, I was able to convert my carseat and carry on into a stroller and push it with 1 hand. The other was free to hold onto the 3 year old's hand.

The device uses the LATCH system hooks from your carseat to strap onto your luggage. If you keep the top one hooked to the device, you can easily unstrap and restrap your carseat. I have a Britax Roundabout and it worked like a charm.

This is a very inexpensive way to keep your sanity when traveling with a carseat.

Brilliant!

I can't believe no one thought of this before! Once we figured out exactly how tight the LATCH straps needed to be getting the car seat attached was a breeze and it was so much simpler than lugging and individual car seat, stroller and luggage through the airport with a toddler in tow (we had done that 3 times in the past and were pretty banged up after each trip)! On our one trip we got at least a dozen inquiries from other parents in the airport. This is the best 15$ a parent who travels could ever spend.

My only issue was if the luggage is older it can definately work againt the pull handle on the suitcase and cause it to collapse while in use. This can be alleviated by pulling the suitcase behind you instead of pushing it in front of you like a stroller. Happy travels!

Great idea....but

I travel a great deal with my 13 month old and always buy a seat for him, so I need his car seat.
This product worked great the first time I used it but the return trip the buckle/latch stopped working, to bad too I really liked the idea.

a must have for anyone traveling with a car seat.

We bought this strap for our long flight from Hawaii to Iowa and back. WE had a couple lay overs and wasnt sure how we were going to transport a 18 month old and her heavy Alpha omega car seat. A friend of ours was traveling at the same time as well with her toddler and she went out and bought an $80 dolly type holder with wheels you attach to it. while it was col and all after paying $3000 for airplane tickets..it was a bit much. This was a total life saver. It took no time at all to deplane and hook it up around our rolling carry on and off we went. We even used it as a stroller and my husband carried the whole car seat with my sleeping daughter in it, attached it to the carry on and we rolled it from one side of Denver airport to the other and back onto another plane with never waking her once. It was AWESOME!!! I do suggest you make sure to have a pretty sturdy, solid sided rolling carry on. We did end up cracking the handle on the cheap one we had..but it was still worth it!
Wish I had known about this a year ago!

This is a product that just makes a lot of simple sense. While on the expensive side for a piece of nylon webbing with rings, I am very glad I paid under $20 for this gadget which does the trick, rather than investing in a special carseat with retractable wheels just for travel, or even the product that's like a dolly for carseats. I did look seriously into those other options, and what I like about the Traveling Toddler is that you don't have an extra item to push around in addition to your luggage, and when you're not using it it fits into your pocket. As far as versatility, I was able to attach my Britax Boulevard carseat to my 26" (non-carry-on) suitcase. (The straps were at their max.) Even though I checked both, it was still a huge help getting from one end of the terminal to the other, and my 17-month old son was happy sitting in it, eating his lunch, and cruising around in it while we waited for our ride on the other side. Since I travel alone with my son quite frequently, I am dearly grateful that the days of lugging that carseat around on my back are over.
I would give it more stars if I could!!!

This is a must have. It worked perfectly and took much of the hassle out of traveling in the airport. We travel often and it was always a little stressful with a 2 year old. Since we got this strap traveling has been a breeze.

Travel before purchase:
One of us (usually me) was elected to take care of said 2 year old while the other had to haul the cumbersome carseat. Keeping up with 2 yr old in airport is not an easy feat. We tried taking a stroller, but he can easily escape. Why would he want to ride in a stroller when he could be running around the airport. By the time we actually got on the plane I was exhausted and frazzled. I tried traveling a few times by myself with 2 yr old and I swore I would never do it again.

Travel after purchase:
Travel is a breeze. Our toddler does not question sitting in his carseat. So he rides without compliant while strapped on a suitcase. No more chasing run away toddler, no more lugging carseat through airport. We normally fly Southwest and we just wheel him down and right into the first row, where the isle is larger, unstrap him(carseat and all) and lift him into the plane seat without ever taking him out. When we land we get the bag and strap his carseat to it and off we go. It is wonderful. It was so easy that I decided I could travel alone with him again and I have with no problems.

It is a simple idea and it may seem expensive for the materials used, but it is a bargain when you consider the headache and hassle saved.

a simple idea that works

This is a simple piece of "T" shaped strap with (3) metal rings on each end. We used it with the Cosco Alpha Omega Elite car seat and it did work as described, although the car seat is larger than our roll on hand luggage, so it was a bit unstable to sit our 2 year old in it too. However, we fitted it to our large wheeled suitcase and it was fine, very stable and our 4 year old was able to ride. This is just a piece of strap, like you'd find on a rucksack, so $15 seems a bit expensive, but we didn't want to pay out $80 for the proper wheeled carrier. And in the end, it worked great, I was able to pull one large suitcase, one car seat and one 4 year old with one hand! Note, you have to really tighten your car seat straps to attach them securely. I have only given 3 stars, because if you buy this to attach to roll on hand luggage, as described by the manufacturer, you might have problems.
