Customer Reviews for Samsung 226BW 22-Inch Digital/Analog Widescreen LCD Monitor (Black) --- Samsung

good, inexpensive monitor for graphic designer

[[ASIN:B000NBBWNU Samsung 226BW 22-Inch Digital/Analog Widescreen LCD Monitor (Black)]]

It's not a MAC Cinema Screen which is my usual monitor, but I needed an inexpensive big screen monitor with good color and resolution for graphic design while living and working out of the country and had a friend bring this to me in Spain when he visited since I couldn't find one here. It's tricky to calibrate to the vibrant color of the MAC screen, but it has some advanced options I am trying out. Samsung makes Apple's monitors, so it was a good alternative...$900 for a 23" Apple Display or $259 for this one!!!

Samsung Monitor

I love this new monitor. It makes everything easier to view & read. It is also great for watching videos and movies. It was a great choice.
SAMSUNG 226BW

It's a really good monitor! ^^
I was really scared it would bleed since I saw some complains about that, but it doesn't!
The fact that it can rotate is really good! ^^ It makes viewing a lot easier!
The only sucky part about it is it doesn't tilt. So if I happen to be standing, there's not way I can look at it correctly. Besides that, it's a great monitor ^^

Best Monitor Period!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I got it out the box and I can say this was a very big monitor and colorful. I recommend a very good video card if you are using it to play games.
Good - had problem - Samsung tech helped!

I bought this monitor new eight months ago.
It performed well until recently. . .colors went off. . .blacks were not deep and rich and it would not produce a good rich brown.

The monitor has a three year parts and labor warranty.
I called Samsung and got a tech support guy on the phone on a Saturday evening (5:30 pm west coast time).

Basic trouble shooting required turning monitor off, pulling all connections (even though still hot), then plugging power back in. . .wait till the floating red green blue box comes up. Then plug the video cable in (still hot).
That reset the monitor to original configuraton. Colors are better and I'm happy with the results.
This is a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW "C" series monitor.
I use it with a MacPro plugged into the DVI and a PC plugged into the analog side.
It gets a four star because it gave me this problem.

very nice. I am very happy with my monitor.
good value for the money.

Samsung syncmaster 226bw

SUPER monitor~~ Makes my computer use so much more enjoyable. I will be purchasing another one. I do wish they had supplied an instruction manual - - other than on a disk. It would have saved me the problem of printing it for use by others.
Absolutely Fantastic

I have owned this monitor for 2 months and use it heavily for a mix of: software development, technical graphics, writing, Web surfing and games (a good mix of different text and graphics functions).

Good:
- Text, even small text is crisp and easy to read.
- Black level is excellent.
- Brightness is excellent (In fact, I operate mine at 75% brightness.)
- Screen refresh is quick: no ghosting or blurring with fast-changing graphics
- 22 inch widescreen format provides plenty of display real estate, especially for paned GUI windows

Bad:
-None to speak of.

In comparison, I have been using a 19" HP LCD display for about 1 year, and the Smasung 226BW provides a much better image, size differences aside.

As a matter of cost, this monitor is also much less expensive than 24" alternatives.

Difficult Setup

This monitor is extremely difficult to set up. I used the native Mac utility and the Samsung one. Both provided some good colors and some bad. I think I tried over 10 times before I was satisfied. Initially, the darker colors, looked great. But the yellow and green were horrible. They were extremely bright which made the monitor unusable.

Pros: Screen size is awesome; Rotating the screen horizontally over 180 degrees is awesome;
Cons: Difficult setup!

Very low quality - beware of repeating problems!

I purchased this monitor and received one that was defective. There was a green stripe down the middle, and I could make it go away by hitting the top of the monitor with my hand - but it would come back after a few minutes. Interestingly, I just noticed that another customer posted a picture here of his monitor with the same problem. It looks like this is a repeating issue with the monitor.

I called Samsung, and they sent me a refurbished one to replace my new one. Guess what! It was also defective, but this time with a different problem. It had a 1/2" stain right in the middle of the screen, so there was a patch of blue/grey color - especially annoying when the surrounding is white. So I called Samsung support and asked for a new monitor rather than a refurbished one this time, and they refused. I guess I should start praying for a good one with time. Bottom line - this monitor is cheaply built (very plasticish) and has many problems.

Recommendation - if you care about your time, definitely stay away from this monitor. The picture is great when it doesn't have problems, but it looks like everyone is having problems.

(I will soon post photos of my problems on this page...)

Great monitor at a great price

I spent a while searching for an affordable LCD monitor to use with my Macbook and ended up purchasing this one based on the reviews I read. This is a great monitor for the price. Yes, the light on the on/off button can be annoying when the monitor is in sleep mode, but you can simply turn the monitor off. The only thing I dislike about this monitor is the lack of USB ports. Other than that, it's perfect.
Replaced 19-inch Dell LCD

I bought the Samsung about two months ago. It took me some time to adjust the video resolution output of my video card to match the new display (1680 x 1050) but after I did, it's been great.
I replaced a Dell Dell E193FP 19-inch LCD screen, and the colors and contrast on this one are considerably better, the text is crisper and clearer.
I am still getting used to the wider aspect ratio of the new monitor and think I will run a sidebar to use some of the extra width. For the price, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Monitor Great - Cable terrible

I use The lcd with my HP Pavilion Notebook (vista) and docking station so I can have a dual monitor setup. Mostly for office and computer work, some video.

I had large waves of light rippling across my screen for a couple of weeks before I had the time to really figure out what was going on. I was ready to take it back when I figured it out. Apparently the lcd is very very sensitive to power noise and fluctuations. So a simple upgrade to a real shielded VGA cable fixed it. Now it looks wonderful.

I have never seen a monitor cable so thin... why even include a cord if it could affect your product so negatively?

Not bad for the price.

This monitor does exactly what I want it to do: gives me more desktop space and enough color to edit photos casually. This is not the highest quality monitor, but it isn't the worst. My monitor does display some "bleeding" on the edges. But honestly, it isn't noticeable unless you are watching a movie with black edges around it. I've grown to be OK with it.

PLUS, I own a Macbook Pro. And will not have a DELL or Gateway on my desktop.. Cliche. So I settled for the Samsung. The 22" size is almost necessary if you really want more space. In widescreen, anything less doesn't seem substantially bigger.

Happy Shoppin

Great monitor... the key is calibration and proper setup

I recently purchased a refurbished model and was a bit concerned about a couple reviews that said the color, contrast and brightness of the monitor wasn't very good. I use a Mac so I do have an advantage out of the box but upon turning this on, I could see where someone might feel there's a problem. However, I never just plug in a monitor and use it, the key is calibration and setting it up correctly for your use.

I initially toned down the brightness and contrast then set the other features to my liking. Once I did that, I went into Mac's built-in calibration program and walked through the steps to calibrate and configure the coloring and tones. The outcome is outstanding!

One thing I'll say about the refurb is that the monitor came in a generic box but Amazon did a good job of packing it so my initial concern about the integrity of the product was dismissed after I assembled and set it up.

Great product, you really can't go wrong with the refurb if you're looking to save a few bucks. Mac users will go nuts over this, absolutely a great buy and while I love Apple products, this monitor, especially for the price, beats the Apple monitor hands down. Oh, and by the way, a VESA mount is forthcoming and this has a very simple mounting pre-set holes in the back, ready to go... nice work Samsung!

Samsung 226BW 22-Inch

This is an excellent product, its so bright I had to turn it so far down I thought it couldn't go any lower ;-)
I would recommend it to every one looking to upgrade to a wide screen LCD.

Bruce

Liked it - while it worked.

First, the good:

This was my first LCD, let alone a widescreen, after finally coming off the CRT gaming hang up and worry about coloring and response rate. Although the 226BW is a TN panel not built with the higher quality displays that the 24" and up LCDs have (which also have 1900x1200 and up resolutions), it is a heck of a buy for such screen real estate and quality. Not only that, but it is a sheer beauty to look at on a desk. The piano black finish is just gorgeous.

The performance in games is just as responsive as CRTs (no ghosting). There is absolutely no light bleed through from the edges, which is important to me as I game at night a lot and several of those games have chapters that take place at night.

Now for the controversial:

Several people have stated that their non-S panel has had issues from flickering to stale coloring even after every calibration possible. For the record, I received an S panel. I have thoroughly enjoyed it, although it did take some time to learn to calibrate different settings for my different games (shooters, racing, & flight sims). When I purchased mine, the "S" was easy to spot. Now apparently Samsung has done away with that and you have to dig deep into the menu to find the code.

Coloring is acceptable for my applications after getting calibrated, but still not as good as the 19" CRT that it replaced. In addition, the blacks aren't as black as the CRT. (You have to move up to the 24" to get CRT comparable image quality). I would not recommend this LCD for graphics designers or Photoshoppers where color accuracy is extremely important. The stand can't be adjusted up or down, but an aftermarket stand can be purchased to replace it (after *already* spending over $300, why should I have to do that?). Finally, the viewing angles have a very narrow field of view, especially in the up or down angle.

Now for the bad:

I purchased this monitor in April of 2007 from a brick & mortar store only because I had a gift card for there. In December when booting up, there was no display. The blue power light behind the button wouldn't even illuminate. I connected it to another PC and it was the same deal. It was dead. I sent it back to Samsung four weeks ago, and still await either my returned unit or a replacement. Some people have had to wait up to 45 days to get theirs back!

That to me is unacceptable, and takes a few notches off my impression of Samsung. I am very disappointed that this unit went out so soon and is taking so long to get back. It was only used on a gaming PC, which averaged about 5 hours a week of usage - hardly heavy use. In addition, I kept a dust cover on it. The failure may be something as simple as a power supply, but the fact is I've been without it for over a month now.

For the record, I own a 46" plasma, a DVD recorder for a TV, a DVD-VHS recorder for a TV, and a DVD-R/W for a PC, all of which are Samsung and all of which I have never had a problem with. I would still overall recommend this LCD, but just keep in mind quite a few of these units have had failures and issues. If I had to do it over, I'd probably just move up to one of the higher quality 24" models, which have far fewer issues.

It is okay but NOT great!

This is a good LCD monitor for the price that you pay for it. It would be better if a pair of internal speaker be added in this unit.
Very big and bright

My last computer was a laptop with a 15.4" screen and now, upgrading to this screen (which is more than 2x bigger), is just like being in heaven.

With that being said, Amazon kind of lied about the 3000:1 contrast ratio. It's actually 700:1 if you look at the Samsung website and it only has 3000:1 contrast ratio under certain conditions.

Otherwise, it's what you'd want out of a screen: it's fast, bright, and big.

Great monitor, very happy

I was worried at first about noticing ghosting etc, this being my first switch from CRT to LCD. But I have been nothing but happy with my new monitor. The only downside I have noticed is the previously mentioned blinking power light when the monitor is in sleep mode. I didn't think it would bother me, but if the lights are turned down it is really bright and annoying.
