Customer Reviews for HP Officejet Pro L7780 Color All-in-One Printer/Fax/Scanner/Copier (C8192A#ABA) --- Hewlett Packard

Great all in one

Purchased this printer because I was told that it was economic to run. After using it for over a month in my small business I have found that it is true. The FAX function works well and the printer is great.
Duplexing not the best...

One of the reasons I chose this model over others is for duplexing. As it turns out, this is not the printers strong point. I've had about 10% of the duplexing jobs jam, which is unexceptable. So, now I don't use the printer the way I intended, and limit my duplexing requests to 1-page jobs that are easy to "redo". All the other functions are easy to use and work fine.
L7780 Software has Issues

The L7780 is a disappointment after having the 7410 which performed well for several years. My complaints are as follows:
(a) Communication between my desktop and the printer in regards to scanning is intermittent. I can always print, but when attempting to initiate a scan, it may or may not connect to the printer. If scanning fails, one must kill the window with task manager. Reintallation of the software does not resolve the issue.
(b) When attempting to use wireless w/DHCP and WEP, the entire keyset of the printer will freeze up. Power cycling does not help. Printer will come back to life if a network cable is physically attached. I have read that using a static IP address rather than dynamic will also resolve this issue.
(c) Software behaves badly on a laptop as follows...Laptop OK when it can find the printer. However, if the laptop is taken to a remote location where the printer is not available, it can cause application issues with Word, Excel, and Outlook. In addition, the "HP Network Devices Support" service can get into a mode where it consumes 50% or more of the CPU resources continuously {which makes my wife believe that the computer is just slow}. My advice to all is do disable this service. Also, be sure to update Microsoft Office to SP3 (Office 2003).
Folks, this is not a cheap printer. HP is not a small company. The expectation is that I unpack the printer, install the software, and put the printer to work.... not spend hours on a per machine basis solving different issues on each machine in my home network. Although I was fond of the 7410, and still think that mechanically this is good device, my advice is to look at printers from other manufacturers. {Avoid those with top paper feeds].

One last thought. When chasing problems such as those mentioned, a great deal of time is spent on the web looking for solutions. The problems mentioned are not just my problems, but are shared by many others...some of which are mentioned in reviews others have posted on this product at this site. Some love this printer and think its great. If you feel uncomfortable about what to do if things don't work correctly right off the bat, I would strongly recommend a different product.

So far so good

I ordered this product since I have a home editing business and am in the publishing business. The price via Amazon was outstanding for the quality of what I received.

It arrived fast, was fairly simple to unpack and set up. The software to load it to my first computer went well. I used the firewire cable to load the software and then used the on-board network wizard to go wireless with my first computer.

The problem came with my second computer load. I could not use the supplied software CD to load the second computer. I kept getting errors. The supplied installation and user manual was pretty much useless on how to set up a second system.

I went to the HP site and downloaded the software drivers and ran them. That worked to load the software on computer #2. According to the installation and user manual with it being wireless all I had to do was search for wireless devices to load the printer. WRONG. My computer #2 would not detect it. I had to run a load option from the main installation screen for wireless interfaces. That was not mentioned in the documentation or on the HP site. Once I ran the software for the wireless interface it directed me to put in a thumb drive to transfer the information to the printer.

I did that and when I put the thumb drive in the printer it said it did not recognize the drive. But it must have worked. Because when I did a search for wireless devices it found it right away.

I spent about three hours on this. Once it was recognized by both computers I put it through some pretty hard double sided printing of different sizes and it worked like a champ.

I will watch for the pitfalls others have found to see if they show up. But so far I am happy.

If you have this printer, please try this and let me know if it works

My father-n-law has this printer and I think it has a design flaw to say the least. First we had to upgrade the OS from ME to XP because the drivers will not work with ME or prior OS's. While waiting for the DSL rep to add the DSL line, we set the printer for stand alone. Copying and faxing was not a problem. After the DSL was added to a separate phone line and number, the faxing stopped. My father-n-law stayed on the phone with the HP rep for hours which resulted in him taking the printer back to the store for another but same printer. I hooked printer #2 up to the DSL line and it worked fine. Then we tried hooking the printer up as a stand alone printer by hooking it up straight to the non-DSL line with only one phone cord from the back of the printer and it will not fax.

It appears to me that however you first setup your printer is the ONLY way that the stand alone fax will work. For example, if you hook up your printer as a stand alone and decide to hook it up as dial-up, DSL etc, then the stand alone fax will not work but if you re-hook it up the way you first did then it will work.

Therefore, I am asking that whoever have this printer please set your printer for stand alone faxing and please let me know if the stand alone fax works. To determine if it works, please follow the below steps and if I am off then please forgive me as I am doing this from memory away from the printer:

1. Press Setup

2. Press OK

3. Arrow down until you see tools which I think is number is six

4. Press OK

5. Arrow down to run fax test which I think is number seven as I might have the numbers confused

6. The printer will run the test and print out the results. If it failed then you know that you have the same problems that I listed and if it passes, then you do not have the same problems. One way to know if it is passing the test and that is while the printer is running the test, you will hear a dial tone. If you do not hear a dial tone, then the odds are that it is not passing the test. It is better to know NOW than later that your printer is not a stand alone printer especially if you just purchased the printer.

7. Then re-hook it up to the way that you had it as it should work.

We have not got passed this point so I cannot review it more than this so when it is up and running, we will be able to update it further. I gave it one star because of the problems that I indicated. My personal printer which is a printer that you might want to research is "Brother MFC-9840cdw Color Laser Multi-Function Center with Wireless Interface and Duplex." The price bounces up and down from around 649-850 dollars. The majority of people are satisfied with this printer and I think you might also be happy with the Brother printer. :)

Absolute rubbish

This is the worst piece of electronics I have ever bought. I could only get past the failure of the software by going to the company site and downloading item by item. Even then only one quarter of the functions worked. The accompanying manual was a waste of time and I couldn't get the help function because of the software failure. When I finally got some response from the machine the scanner, the fax or the two-sided printing wouldn't work. The print rate was disgustingly slow unless you selected draft and grayscale only. Finally, to add insult to injury they don't even give you full ink cartridges to start yet it is one of the most expensive machines in its range.
Do not buy this product.

Really Glad I Made This Choice

I spent quite amount of time reading reviews and researching for the best printer to accomodate my needs. Price was also a factor. There were some reviews that rated this printer higher and some lower. But when I made up my mind to purchase another printer I held off and kept coming back to this one and so far I am glad I did. I am a person who has no clue on what makes the guts of a computer tick, I received the printer and installed it in about 15 minutes without any problems. I followed instructions step by step, they were easy to understand and simple to follow. So far everything has worked as I expected and print color and quality is very sharp. Amazon had the cheapest price for this printer and ordering and shipping was easy and fast. Thanks Amazon for a great experience.

My HP Officejet Pro review

Just bought this printer January 28th and so far, it has been great. The install was easy and smooth, once the printer finished its rather lengthy initialization. I know very little when it comes to technology and bought this printer because of the person who helped me at the store. I told him that I was running Windows Vista and he said that it would work just fine and it has so far. I have wireless in my home and wanted to be able to print and fax from my laptop from anywhere in my house. I read the directions and followed them step by step and within one hour I had it up and running with everything working. I didn't use or need any cables when setting it up. The installation was painless.

I can send faxes from my laptop with easy. Copying works as expected. Scanning is great. The digital filing function allows you press a button to scan documents from the feeder or glass directly to a network drive without needing to do anything on a connected computer. You can also request a scan from a computer as with most all-in-ones.
Print quality is excellent. Speed for black print is fast. Color printing is color printing but the quality is very good.
After reading the reviews, I was hesitant to buy this product but my experience has been better than I anticipated. I believe most of the negative reviews are because people didn't follow the directions.

The PROs rock, but the CONs are not minor

PROs:

- Feature of scanning directly to a Windows network share, without HP software on workstation.

- Availability of reduced-footprint Windows printer driver for workstations that only print, without having to also install scanner driver or HP creative software.

- Multi-page scan through the automatic document feeder can be saved to single multi-page PDF file.

- Better print head design than 73xx/74xx series; appears unlikely to fail in the way this earlier series repeatedly did.

- Separate individual ink color cartridges. Print head(s) are separate from the ink cartridges.

- Wi-Fi connectivity standard in addition to Ethernet.

- Large capacity additional input paper tray standard.

CONs:

- Although the Windows printer driver can accurately control which paper input tray should be used, not enough features on the printer itself are aware of the "Tray 2" included standard with this printer. The front-panel "Copy" feature can be set to default to Tray 2, but even though general "Default Tray" and "Tray Lock" settings also exists in the configuration menu, both INCOMING FAXES and any printer status or FAX reports and test pages always come from Tray 1 regardless of what paper is loaded there and regardless of which tray is default/locked. (Confimed by HP support to be "intended" behavior.) Which is unfortunate because Tray 1 is the only tray that supports photo paper and photo paper is what's likely to be loaded there, causing loss/truncation of the incoming FAX.

- Have not successfully used duplex feature without a paper jam.

- First printer was DOA with a mechanical deadlock in the paper feed mechanism. Second printer worked fine out of the box.

- This printer is more strict with regard to what features are allowed to be selected with which types of paper. For example, 73xx/74xx series would let me run plain paper through as "borderless" and set to "draft" quality as to not over-saturate with ink. L7780 requires that photo paper be used for "borderless" (and therefore, also requires Tray 1 be used), and eliminates the "draft" quality selection when using photo papers. Causing complete over-saturation of ink if you attempt to proceed with borderless printing on plain paper, and in my experience made this impossible.

CONCLUSION:

Overall, the printer is to be applauded for setting the bar high for features, and improving some of the mechanical shortcomings of the 73xx/74xx series. But the "incoming FAXes cannot use Tray 2" condition is just utterly inexcusable for a printer in this price range that includes the additional tray standard. Makes me begrudgingly a "mostly satisfied" HP owner, instead of a happy one.

Quality issues - lousy support

I'm on my second printer now. The first refused to print duplex (paper jam all the time). The 2nd printer has problems printing duplex after 20 pages or so. I've already spent hours with HP support on this - HP HAS THE WORST SUPPORT - let me repeat that one more time: HP HAS THE WORST SUPPORT. If you get a printer that works flawlessly, consider yourself lucky. If not, then be prepared to spend HOURS on the phone and very frustrating waiting periods. As far as I'm concerned, there are no quality checks and I personally spent a lot more time on this than what the printer is actually worth. I would have paid double the money if I didn't have to deal with HP's support. I long for quality not quantity - if any printer manufacturer out there reads this, please, whatever happened with printers that just worked?
Good luck- you're going to need it

I purchased this for use in my office. When it is working it sounds like the paper is being attacked. But the printing quality is fine. But every time I disconnect my laptop for travel use, I have to reinstall the software. I have 3 other older HP printers, I have sworn by them to others. This printer is nothing but a headache. I'm getting tired of installing this software and this is my second replacement. And yes the duplex system leaves a lot to be desired. Don't buy this unless you have very low quantity needs. There are cheaper printers that offer more.
A Real Workhorse

I cannot say enough good things about this device. We had another HP multifunction device that we had purchased several years ago. While not bad, it was cumbersome and not easy to use all of the time (there were some problems with paper jams and the print cartridges, and the print speed was slow). This machine offers the same functionality only better. I have used very robust multi-function devices at our office and this machine offers a virtually identical feature set. The speed is good, the print quality great, scan options are terrific and, while I do less and less faxing these days, the fax function is good as well. The duplex features also work very well and the fact that the device is wireless means I can place it anywhere in the house and obtain access from any computer. Previous purchasers noted difficulties with software installation and/or getting the machine operable on a wireless network. I experienced none of these problems and found the system easy to install. Overall, a really great investment!
terrible experience

Wifi just doesnt work consistently. Printer goes into sleep mode and you cannot get it to work again. Returned it 2 times and finally purchased an older HP platform and have had better luck. Stay away from the 7000 series!
Good Purchase-good value

I read so many mixed reviews of all products on this type of feed back that I am reluctant to buy anything. However, I heard good things about this printer all in one and it had the features I wanted including the wireless access printing that I took the plunge. I am moderately skilled with technology, no wizard by any means. I found the unpacking and set up very easy with excellent instructions. The function was easy and so far it works wonderfully. The wireless function through my Apple Airport Extreme has been flawless. The quality is great and it is easy to use. I will use it for home and some office functions. So far I am very, very pleased and recommend this product. The price was absolutely excellent through Amazon and price was a significant factor in my purchase.
Duplex Jam kills feature

I bought the HP Officejet Pro L7780 with high hopes for all of its advertised features. So many good reviews, but I too am having problems with the duplex unit causing paper jams intermittently. What good is a tool if you constantly have to mess with it. I am going to return it tomorrow. Why would HP, a company known for quality, sell out on the one thing that set them apart? Bah Humbug.

Keith

Installing and using the HP L7780 is a real time sink

My 1st job out of calloges was with HP and I loved the company back then in the 70's and early 80's. Quality was a must. The HP Officjet Pro L7780 ought not to have been released. The installation was a nightmare and had to be completed many times. Once that was accomplished after many hours of frustration the paper has been jamming repeatedly. After a few months of this I am ready to throw the thing out.

Don't buy one of these nightmares unless you are ready to waste a great deal of time with hassles every step of the way.

Wireless didn't work with my Mac and other issues

This was the first larger purchase I made with Amazon. Both the experience and the product were disappointing.
The experience-Amazon lost my first order! They sent me a confirmation per usual and then a shipping notice with a UPS tracking number and a promise delivery date. After that day came and went I went to "Where's My Stuff?" and got nothing. I called UPS. They said they never got the order to ship from Amazon. I called Amazon's Helpline and talked to someone in India who I could barely understand. After some further frustrations, they reordered the printer at no cost. By now it had been a week, so I asked for free overnight shipping, which the agreed to. The next shipping notice came through, with a promise of delivery the next day. It took another 3 days, in fact.
The Product - It was just what I wanted. Well, I didn't really need the extra tray, but I wanted a wireless printer, because a hardwired connection just won't work where I wanted to locate it. Unfortunately, the wireless feature didn't work with my Mac PowerBook G4. When I tried to set the wireless connection using the built-in wizard in the printer, the printer locked up. The HP customer service people (back to India) finally got me to the Mac experts in Canada. They were actually pretty good. They said there was a history of this printer not working with certain kinds of wireless routers. They walked me through how to set it up manually. It didn't work. They finally concluded I'd have to hook it up directly (UPS or ethernet), which, of course, was not why I had bought this model in the first place. On my own I tried to use an Airport Express bonjour connection. This too failed. When I tried to add the boujour printer in the print dialog box, it won't take it. I gave up and returned the printer to Amazon. I ended up buying the Brother MFC9440CN instead. It worked as a bonjour printer on the first try, as my other Brother printer had. But unfortunately,it doesn't have some of the other features I'd wanted with the L7780. A lesson I definitely learned with this experience was to pay more attention to the reviews before I made the purchase.

Really great printer

I bought this printer for my home office, and have been VERY happy with it. The install was very easy (I'm set up in wired-network mode), the built in web browser on the printer makes configuring it easy and fast, and the performance is GREAT.

Having the autofeeder, the high pages per minuted, and the extra paper cartridge make printing (and copying) on this a joy.

Another great feature I've been using a lot is being able to just save scans on various network drives. Easy to set up (via the web interface), and a great way to do it - the PDF's just show up in my shared folder.

I would highly recommend this printer for a home office or a small to medium office place. I'm glad to have gotten rid of my last all-in-one, and look forward to years of using the L7780.

HP Officejet SLOW

This machine prints beautifully IF you can get it set up. As a relatively computer savy consumer, I expected to spend the afternoon setting up this machine. After six phone calls to HP Support which ranged from helpful to misleading, fifteen hours of frustration, I was able to get it to print. HP support is time comsuming, requires endless prompts, routes you to the wrong tech support, and then finally gives you incorrect information. On the basis of getting this set up, unless you have endless patience and time, another product might suit you better.
Wireless problems and how I resolved them...

I just received this printer today as a replacement for my HP d135. When I configured wireless networking, the printer continually locked up and required unplugging from the AC power, and connecting an ethernet cable to regain any control over the printer. Once I got it to respond, I had to go into the advanced network settings, turn off "automatic IP" which uses DHCP.

After manually specifiying an unused static IP address on my network, I re-enabled the printer's wireless network. Now, wireless networking behaves as it should, and the printer seems to work quite well (I've tested every feature except faxing so far). I like the printer and the scan to network folder features which work fine. The actual printing operation isn't very noisy at all, however, when the machine feeds a sheet of paper, that's when it is a bit noisy.

I chose this printer because of the wireless, scan to folders, draft print speed, and the fact that there are continuous ink systems available for it.

Hopefully my review can save some other people from hours of frustration with the bugs in HP's firmware. I'm an engineer and have worked with hi-tech stuff for over 20 years.

Now where do I send the bill for my wasted 3 hours working around your bugs HP? Spank you very much! I like the printer, but for heaven's sake do some software quality control!
