Customer Reviews for HP DesignJet 130 Large Format Printer (C7791C#A2L) --- Hewlett Packard

Great Printer GREAT PRICE!!!

We purchased this printer for the school district that I work at and I am the primary user. I love this printer!!! I have printed school marketing posters with full photo quality and it looks as though we hired a professional. I am not sure what a previous reviewer was talking about not being able to get paper anymore because we can still get it right from the [...] website. It has a variety of media it can print on from regular heavy paper, glossy photo paper, and even Tyvek. We use the Tyvek for our outdoor signage. It isn't a "super" fast printer but I can't imagine anything printing in this large a format printing very fast anyway. We have had local professional photographers come in and want to see it and look at samples and now they are considering getting one!!! This is a great printer and I would recommend it to anyone professional or to anyone just wanting to print out large format pictures. The WOW factor will never go away!!!
Great printer from an awful company

I've had this printer for two years and it prints marvelous prints. The problem I have is with HP: they decided to stop making paper for this printer and, instead, told me to go with 3rd parties. A company that doesn't stand behind their products is one that will not get future business from me.
Worst Printer ever designed

This printer is absolute crap. Trying to feed a large poster size piece of paper into is, well, forget it. Crap! It is good for an 8 1/2 x 11 test page only.
Affordable large format printer

Very versatile large format printer. Can be used for CAD or as a large photographic printer with equally great results. Twelve ink cartridges may prove to be expensive in the long run.
Brother lasers are great for Linux

I'm a Linux-only user, so I can't say how well this printer works with Windows or Mac. However, it's a fine printer and I've had no problems with it on my Debian and Gentoo systems. I installed the PPD file that comes on the CD into my CUPS printing system and, voila, it just worked. I interface the printer through a Linksys print server running on my local network with no issues. The second tray and automatic duplex features work as advertised. The printouts are a little on the light side (esp. in toner saver mode naturally) but the quality is fine. Start up time when cold is about 10-15 seconds. Note that when using the PPD (Postscript) drivers you will want to buy the memory upgrade. Its around 50 dollars from online sources. If you don't you won't get anywhere near the advertised print speed unless you use basic HP Laserjet drivers, and those won't give you access to the printer's options (duplexing, resolutions, etc). My only complaint with this printer (and true of most in this price range) is the sparse control panel. When the front panel LED blinking light show starts you have no idea what the printer is trying to tell you until you read the manual (which only comes in PDF format on the included CD--no paper manual.) The Windows driver apparently has a Control Panel applet that reads printer status, but that isn't of much use in Linux or when the printer is networked. For the money though, this is one fine printer.
Defective! Don't Waste your time and money!

I initially tried to use the scanjet with my Compaq Presario 900. After spending over 2 hours with technical support, they recommended I update my Bios, Re-install XP, or buy a self powered USB Hub. I tried the USB port option to no avail. I wasted my money. I bought a brand new Compaq Presario V2220US Notebook and still could not get the scanner to work. One would think a new Compaq could communicate with a new HP. After another 2 hours with technical support, they concluded that the scanner was defective. I received a replacement scanner and received the exact same error message. I read the ZD NET reviews and Amazon reviews after my purchase and learned too late that the product (Software) is apparently defective. I have used 2 other HP multi-function printer-scanners successfully. I am now waiting for a return call to honor my request for a full refund. I agree with the other opinions that the software is defective and furthemore, uninstalling the software is extraordinarily complex. Please don't waste your time and money like I have. Shame on HP for continuing to market this defective product.
LEMON WARNING

The software is lame. and the document feeder is random. Doing the most simple basic processes is a frustating battle, and one is forced to by trick the software/machine into performing properly. the default preference function is non exhistant.

There's a special circle in hell for the designer of this beast.

ADF has severe problems

The ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) has severe problems, working only 40% of the time. I would never recommend this product. In the 30 days that I have owned this equipment, HP has sent me four (4) replacement ADF. I have finally reached my limit of frustration and will be returning this poor example of a scanner.

The Customer Service people are extremely polite, however, unable to understand the problem presented. I found most of them to be almost incompitent. Additionally, when I was connected with a sales person to help me determine a more reliable scanner that I should purchase, I found that once again, they were unable to respond to the questions presented to them. I was almost wondering if I was speaking a language other than English. I have been very dissapointed with the entire process.

The Same Computer Will Print to Only One HP 995!

I enjoyed printing wirelessly from my laptop to my HP 995 printer at home so much -- I decided to buy another one for my office. After I installed it, I managed to get my Palm 515 to print to this new device via either infrared or Bluetooth, but I could only get my laptop to print by using a USB cable; it would not print wirelessly.

After calling HP's help desk, I soon learned (from a very helpful technician who was involved in the Beta testing of the HP 995) that the HP 995 was designed so that the printer driver for only one HP 995 could be installed on a computer at any given time (and that each individual printer creates its own dedicated printer driver). If I wanted to print to my new office 995, I would need to dis-install the printer driver for my home 995! It was not anticipated, according to this technician, that very many consumers would want to use two 995's at the same time from the same computer. (HP, hell-o!)

So, while I can print wirelessly (via either IR or Bluetooth) from my Palm to either of my HP 995 printers, I can only print to one of them from my laptop.

I was very much looking forward to the mobility of working either at home or at my office on my laptop -- and then printing wirelessly in either location (up to 30 feet away) without having to be tethered via cable. As a result of this limitation, my work-around (at least for MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint) is to download the file to my Palm (using Docs To Go) -- and to print the document from my PDA while at work. (This situation is only tenable since my personal laptop and printer are not my primary computing devices in my office.)

I think being able to print to only one HP 995 at-a-time is a huge oversight on HP's part. Wouldn't you agree?

Prints via PC USB & Mac bluetooth at the same time!

This printer is bluetooth enabled and also has a USB port. I have a Mac with bluetooth and a PC with a USB port and was able to set up the printer to work with both at the same time. I just installed the software on both machines and it works! Saves valuable deskspace. If you have two computers (one bluetooth and one with USB) and would like to be able to print to just one printer - this one seems to work! This is not a feature they address in the product manual - I just tried it and it worked.

Please note that printing via bluetooth involves a slight time delay because it takes longer to transmit the info via bluetooth than it does via USB.

Hooray! I can now print to two 995c?s from the same PC!

The HP 995c is one of HP's most capable printers. It will print wirelessly via Bluetooth or infrared (IR) - allowing me to work untethered from my laptop PC and from my Palm PDA. It even permits my daughter to print (without cables) from her portable AlphaSmart Dana Palm OS word processor, which she loves.

Until recently, the HP 995c had a software weakness which prevented more than one print driver from being installed on a given laptop - at any one time! (Unbelievable, isn't it?) This precluded me from printing wirelessly to the two 995c's I have - one each in my home and in my office - somewhat defeating the purpose of the unit's wireless capabilities.

I recently discovered, though, that HP has issued new printer drivers (and new printer firmware) for the 995c -- that is available on HP.com -- that fixes this limitation. For the very first time, I can now print wirelessly to both of my HP 995c's from the same PC! Hooray!

In case you're interested, here's how I use my two 995c's:

-First, in my home (in the family room), unattached to any PC. My daughter prints out her homework from her AlphaSmart Dana. And I print out my e-mails and various web pages - while I sit in my favorite chair and watch TV from across the room!

-Second, in my office as a personal desktop ink jet printer - as a replacement for my company's networked laser printers which, due to their remote locations, are just a pain to use. The 995c is hard-wired to my laptop's docking station. But since I've also installed a 3Com Bluetooth PC Card in the laptop itself, I really don't need to dock in order to print, which makes working remotely in and around my office that much more convenient. I've also loaded BtPrint (from ISComplete.com) into my Palm 515m, which allows me to print Calendar, Address, Memo and To Do list entries, as well as MS Word documents from DataViz's Docs To Go. So, needing to dock, or upload information from my Palm to my PC, in order to print - is simply a thing of the past!

Unfortunately, since HP has decided not to install either Bluetooth or infrared capabilities into their newest generation of printers (except the HP Deskjet 450cbi), the 995c remains one of the best all-around choices for printing wirelessly via either Bluetooth or IR -- from PC's, Palms and Pocket PC-style devices. If wireless printing is something you'd like to enjoy - without having to undertake the expense of establishing a WiFi network in your home or office - the HP 995c is definitely an easier way to go! I now love my two 995c's - even more than I did before!

MY PHOTOS LOOK TERRIBLE!!!

We have had our hp Photosmart 7760 for just 7 months and already my photos look TERRIBLE!!! The blues are turning green, the flesh tones are fading to white and the entire photo takes on a sickening yellow tone.

I AM BITTERLY DISPPOINTED!!! The pictures are SO BAD that it is NOT WORTH spending the money for the ink and the photo paper.

HP's solution was to use PhotoShop to add a Sepia Tone to the pictures -- YEAH, RIGHT -- then I'll have YELLOWISH-BROWN PICTURES!!!

Paper jams!

All this printer will do for us is give paper jams. Really. It jams more than it prints. I've had great luck with some HP Deskjet printers in the past, but this is absolutely useless. Sure we could probably exchange it for one that jams slightly less, but it really just seems very shoddily constructed, and I suspect the replacement would still jam, perhaps not quite as much. And HP will not allow us to exchange it for a Deskjet printer - only for another Photosmart.. Very dissatisfied, and I suspect that this will be the last time I purchase an HP printer. HP used to make great inkjets, but these days I gather from many people that Epson is the way to go anyways.
Not Store Quality Pics

We bought this printer after a Salesperson gave it a high recommendation. We were told that the pictures would look like store bought photos. After hooking it up and loading the software we started printing. We were extremely dissapointed! Our pictures were VERY grainy. We tried switching the print option to best instead of normal, which helped but our pictures were still not perfect. The colors looked washed out, even though we were using the HP paper. Also, when we printed borderless pictures it wouldn't print to the end of the paper. We still had a finger width border on the left side(or sometimes it was on the right hand side?!). Maybe this can be fixed, but the software is difficult to understand and we were unable to figure it out. The best pictures were the ones we printed with the border, but it makes the picture small with a LARGE white border. Not exactly store quality! We are returning this printer to buy a more expensive (and hopefully better)one!
I had to respond

I've got to say that this unit works perfectly with my wife's powerbook. Unlike other posters, I had NO problems with it at all on my G5 at work, my G4 at home and her powerbook. The sound is fantastic and it works really well with the Apple audio control program which recognizes it right away. My setup for mic level input includes a professional mic which is amplified by a separate mic amp. The output of that line level amp feeds right into this unit. Additionally, the sound output to my headphones is a step above what is built into my G5.
Great unit with the Mac and podcasting

I have had ZERO problems with this unit. It's plug and play on my Apple G4 tower running OS X (Panther) as well as my PowerBook G4. I use the Fast Track with Audio Hijack Pro, Detour , Soundflower, Audacity and it works like a charm. The only thing lacking is phantom power for a microphone, which I solved with an ART tube preamp which you can get on Amazon for about $50 U.S.
Hmmm not quite sure!!!????

I ve given this 1 star because i cant get it to work properly with my ibook!. Not sure about windows users though. It doesnt work with any of my programs , guitar rig , gt express (which comes bundled with the product!!!!!) and garage band. The company advertises this product as perfect for garageband. I've also read in other forums that the low latency is rubbish. Buy at your own peril!!!!!!!!
EXCELLENT PRINTER!!!!!
