Avoid the frustration
This review is in reference to the 1041 and related forms. Instead of buying this program just use the forms on the IRS website, because Taxcut's help menu will send you there anyway. The "walk through interview" is a joke. Navigating thru the forms is very cumbersome and heaven forbid if you incorrectly enter anything and try to correct it. I talked to someone at H&R Select and they informed me that the program assumes you have a certain level of knowledge to use the program (like your Masters in accounting?). They also informed me they do not use the program. So I thought I would be generous and give it a one star rating.

2007 Tax Cut
About 4 years ago I switched from Turbo Tax to Tax Cut and have never looked back. I find Tax Cut to be a complete and comprehensive product, easy to install and use.

What Happened?!?!?!
Last year I used Tax Cut and it worked brilliantly. This year was painful beyond belief. Buttons would route to incorrect places, the program would not route to errors, nor would it let you access locations of some errors yet would not let you proceed without correcting the errors. On-line support was not even close to helpful. Most concerningly is the excessive number of times the program required me to input my banking information, only to have to repeat it again after the "next" button kicked me somewhere unexpected. I severely regret ever hearing of this supposed tax prep "service".

Next year TurboTax
I have been a TaxCut fan for 3 years and now wish that I have never heard about this software product. If you have a Vista operating system, do yourself a favor and do not buy this product. It has been a nightmare! I have been working with the taxcut people for TWO months. I have been waiting so long, that they offered me a free "key" code for the online system and so I spent a couple of days completing my return and then went to file and found out that the key code doesn't work. I have been on hold for hours and no one seems to care.

BEWARE: 3rd Party Purchase = NO Support
Like many others, I've used TaxCut for a number of years. This year, I chose to buy TaxCut Home/Business from the cheapest site recommended by PriceGrabber, a site with a very good rep. The product arrived fine but when I went to install it, it just hung at the Setup Files point. Yes, I disabled anti-v and even the firewall; no joy. OK, call H&R. First round, load some VB Run stuff off the cd, reboot, try again. No joy. Call H&R w/case number given from first call. Told that it was not supported because purchase was not made from them. Told them I would provide copy of my invoice as proof of purchase. They said no way they can receive such. Well, this means they do not stand behind their product and therefore I will not buy TaxCut in the future. I'm not a fan of TurboTax either but with the proverbial rock and hard place, I'm leaving the rock and going to the hard place until I find a suitable alternative to the "big 2".

Okay.
This product does a reasonable job. I have not tried other packages so don't know how it compares to others. It meets my somewhat limited needs.

Pay your CPA
Tried again to go out on my own with prepping taxes this year and once again I am paying double to get them done- I was lost in a matter of a few minutes with this software and left there scratching my head in wonder because there is no answers with this junk software- now i waited an extra four weeks(amazon took for ever to send this out) and another eighty freaking dollars so I can just go have my CPA to do my taxes in the end- Dont waste your time and money on this software.

Good Basic Product, but you better know taxes yourself
I've used H&R Block's TaxCut for a number of years, since TurboTax began installing spyware in its software, and I have found the product consistently easy to use and basically worthwhile with a couple of exceptions.
The program generally works well on material that it covers with some exceptions. However, as other reviewers have stated, if you have any type of special circumstances to your return, especially in the state returns, then you better know how to prepare the return data yourself, because TaxCut will not do it for you. The biggest areas of shortfall are in state return preparation where TaxCut simply has you fill out the forms with little or no guidance.
This year I found myself in an unusual situation, I bought a car, a Prius, so I have state and federal tax credits available to me. TaxCut handled the federal credit fairly well. the exception being that after having asked me the date I purchased the car (rather placed it in service) it then defaulted to the wrong period in a later screen related to the time frame in which I purchased the car, which had I not correct TaxCut's default selection, I would have lost half of my Federal Tax Credit. I don't know how the state calculation faired, since at the date of review, TaxCut has still not published the Colorado State Tax program.
Also, because of the purchase of the car, I opted to deduct the sales tax I paid rather than state income taxes as part of my federal return. Tax Cut asked for and properly identified the amount of my state sales taxes, then asked for my county, which was available in my case, but was not in many others, and then asked me to fill in my locality (city) tax rate. The implication being that TaxCut had dealt with the other sales taxes, i.e. county, and in our case RDT regional taxes. I filled in our city tax rate and moved on. TaxCut then warned me that the amount of my city tax rate was likely wrong, because it was higher than my state sales rate. Not only was the rate not wrong, and TaxCut would have known that had they simply inserted a test that compared my rate to a range of actual rates within my county rather than the simple test to compare it to the state tax rate. But it also computed my estimated sales tax deduction incorrectly. This is because it failed to include my county tax rate, which it specifically asked for, and the regional RTD tax, which is applied to counties in the area, including mine.
The Bottom line is that while the basics are there for your tax preparation; don't count on TaxCut to properly handle any special circumstances correctly. Research the information yourself or go to a tax preparer. By the way, I am a CPA, but DO NOT do tax return work, nor am I affiliated with a firm that does, so this recommendation is not based on me trying to get work for my firm.

TaxCut...Almost Good
This is my second time I have tried to switch from TurboTax to TaxCut. TaxCut offers seemingly a lower cost to do my personal taxes. All worked pretty good until I started doing my Missouri state taxes. At issue is that the interview process has no entry point for placing money contributed to the Missouri's 529 program called Missouri MOST. TaxCut has the proper line 10 located on form Mo-A (the Missouri equivalent to Schedule A), but not in the interview. One can manually enter the contribution on the form directly, but doing so prevents one from eFiling the return to the state. I can't imagine that I am one of the few people taking advantage of the Missouri MOST deduction especially anyone with kids in college or going to be going to college. So the bottom line is that TaxCut is almost good, but not good enough. I am going to pay a little more and go back to TurboTax!

Only if you already know what forms you need...
I bought this because I needed help filing my first year of an S-Corp business; however, when I got to the State return, I had to select which forms applied to me. That is something I wasn't prepared for, as I thought that's why I had bought the program. Others may already be clear on this, but for anyone who is hoping this is the do-it-all program, not so much luck. :)

Tax Cut vs. Turbo Tax
I bought Tax Cut Home and Business because it had the proper forms for my LLC, unlike Turbo Tax. Plus, the cost was much cheaper than Turbo Tax. However, what they don't tell you is that as often as not, when looking for information, it will direct the user to the government instructions on how to fill out the answer to their questions. Plus, when doing a search, it does not search on key words, only on forms. I did an error check, and it had two of the same errors (on two K-1 forms for two different members of the LLC) and it allowed me to change the value on both as it directed me to, but it did not recognize one of the changes, even though it was the same form for two different people. Lastly, it doesn't automatically import data from the forms you fill out on the business software to your personal return. Unless I'm mistaken, you need to print it out, then manually put the values in the right places. This software is not dumbed down like Turbo Tax - if you know your way around IRS tax forms for business, this software is for you. But then, if you know your way around the IRS forms, you don't need the software.
Right now, I'm thinking about going back to Turbo Tax next year.

WORKES LIKE A CHARM!
I love this product! After going with the "others" for several years, and not realizing the return or ease of use, I tried this product. I have a small business, as well as other investments throughout the year. The interview is very easy and you always have a means to go back and make changes. The e-file is great and it's FREE! I would give this product 5 Stars, and place it up against the "others" any day!!

TaxCut is easy to use and it works!
I have been using TaxCut since 2004 for self tax preparation. I have noticed how improvements have been made to simplify the software package (as including the State and the e-file into a single package). For this year I consider the user interface is slightly more streamlined, more FAQs to help users figure out those unusual tax choices, and faster focus on upgrading the software for IRS forms.
I used it to file personal and business taxes and all is included in this software package. I filed last week and my return was already accepted. Very happy with the product.

Home is excellent, Business is very good
I would like to give this product 5 stars and in fact the Home tax return application gets 5 stars in my opinion. The interview process has been streamlined since 2006 and it is excellent. Before starting the interview for each section you check off some boxes, the boxes you don't check mean you don't go through the interview process for those issues. Saving much time and effort!
On the business side things have gotten better but there are still quite a few holes in the product as far as not having good explanations along the way. I mean it's basically the same thing every year so why can't they include a good explanation for every line in every form? In addition sometimes it's really difficult to see which worksheet a certain entry is linked.
Still a very good product for the money.

Do it yourself tax returns
Those of you who have simple tax returns to prepare this program is fine. If you have a mortgage and pay real estate taxes - maybe even a couple of capital gains to report, this is fine. If your return starts to get more complicated than mentioned above.....see a pro, either an Enrolled Agent, Tax Attorney, or a CPA.
Stay away from tax return 'preparers' that you would find for a few months in a department store or at a mall, stick with the pros mentioned in the previous sentence.
Remember, you want every dollar you overpaid refunded to you, you don't want an audit, which even if the IRS doesn't find anything wrong, you will probably have paid a pro to handle the audit at extra cost to you.

TaxCut Home & Business not for Vista
The disk says it works with Vista but it doesn't.
It installs slick. Then you click.
The "update" button generates the error message: "Run time error 339 Component comdlg32.ocx or one of it's dependencies not correctly registered a file is missing or invalid."
This OCX is associated with MS VisualBasic. I have the developer's version of VB installed and the comdlg32.ocx works fine. So, I installed the earlier version of VB. Same error. I manually registered the OCX - same error.
After the help support "chat" folks hung up on me for the third time, I realized that H&R Block wasn't actually going to stand behind their product.
Don't bet your business on a product that has a poorly written install routine, isn't tested on Vista, and has zero tech support. Their website is also awful as it doesn't list the product code for the CD I bought, doesn't list "Home & Business" as an option, and punishes you by making you enter a page of personal information to get to Help which isn't.
Just awful!

Don't bother wasting your time if you own Vista
This product does not work with Windows Vista. The software on the mail out disk is still in Beta and will not install on Windows Vista. Funny enough the tech suport guy tried to blame Vista and not address the real issue that Tax Cut was not properly developed and tested. I have been using and building computers for 15+ years and I have not run into install problems like this since Windows 95:(
While attempting to install Premium with E-file from the mailed out disk, the install program errors out with a file permission change error. Do not waste your time calling tech support unless you want a refund. I spent an hour fighting with this software before calling support and wasted another 40 minutes with tech support retrying the same things. Finally I was told that someone would call me back at a later date to help resolve the issue. At this point I demanded my money back since they would not compensate me for the time I already wasted not to mention the time I would be spending to trouble shoot there install problem. No more Tax Cut for me, ever!

Good For Normal Taxes
Very good product for the "normal" tax payer. Schedule C info is very good but some of the intricacies of LLC and S-Corp fillings are a bit harder to understand and the questions are not as clear as they should be.
Bottom line, if you own a home and you have mortgage and/or a sole propitiership, this is top notch 5 stars. If you recently formed an LLC and are looking towards this product I would strongly recommend you speak to a tax professional ( A CPA not one of the chain stores) instead.
